How to write a love story

All you have to do is touch my hand
To show me you understand
And something happens to me
That’s some kind of wonderful

From Some Kind of Wonderful, lyrics Carole King

If you’ve never written a love story before, here are some ideas that might get you started. You may think you already know everything about the person, place, people, object or activity you love, but often times sitting down and writing about it can lead to new discoveries. Very often, when we write, the object reveals itself to us as if it has a life of its own. Put another way; you may think you know exactly how you fell in love, but do you really?

Contrary to what books tell you, a love story doesn’t need a beginning, middle or ending. It can be any length and take any direction. Here are some questions to get you thinking, and writing.

***

Where were you when you first fell in love?

How closely related are love and desire?

What does love mean to you?

Is all love happy?

What’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?

How do you show your love for others?

How many times have you been in love?

What is romance?

Do you believe in forever?

Where does your love story take place? Is this important to the story?

If you go could go back in time what would you do differently? Would you ask him out? Would you tell her how you really felt?

Does love change over time?

What colour is love?

What was the most important thing said to you in your love story?

What was/ is the most important moment in your story?

Did you experience change during your story? What did you learn?

Is love a conversation, or a journey, or an act, or a privilege, or a curse, or an illusion, or a mystery, or the most mundane thing ever?

What was the kindest thing someone said to you?

Do love and hate always, or ever, go hand in hand?

Who are the characters in your love story? What did they, or do they want, from each other, and from life?

How many types of love are there?

Do you love yourself? Do you even really know yourself?

Describe love to an alien.

If you could sum up love in one sentence what would it be?

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Is it better to have love and lost than never to have loved at all?

Is sex important?

Describe your best kiss.

What can children teach us about love?

Can humans ever be truly free?

What does it mean to grow old?

What did you learn from your parents?

Do you believe in your partner?

What are the ingredients that make a “successful” relationship?

Are you a good flirt?

What’s the hardest decision you’ve ever made?

Where do you feel most safe?

What makes you laugh?

If you could do it all again. Would you? Would you do anything differently?

If you could scream at the top of your lungs, what would you say?
